General Tips for All Fabrics
-
Avoid Overwashing: Only wash your garments when necessary to prolong their life. Spot clean minor stains to avoid frequent washes.
-
Use Gentle Detergents: Harsh chemicals can degrade fabric fibers, so always opt for mild, fabric-specific detergents.
-
Avoid Harsh Sunlight: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can fade colors and weaken fibers. Always dry and store your garments in a shaded area.
-
Follow the Care Labels: Always refer to the care labels on your garments for specific instructions and recommendations.
Silk
Silk is a delicate, natural fiber that needs special care to preserve its sheen and softness
Wash by hand in cold water with a mild detergent made for delicate fabrics. Avoid wringing or twisting the fabric. Air-dry by laying the garment flat on a clean towel, keeping it out of direct sunlight. Iron on the reverse side with a cool iron while the fabric is slightly damp. Use a pressing cloth if needed. Store silk in a cool, dry place, ideally in a breathable cotton bag to prevent yellowing and protect from moisture.
Wool
Wool garments provide warmth and comfort, but improper care can cause shrinking or damage. Hand wash or use a wool-friendly machine cycle with cold water and a wool detergent. Regular detergents can be too harsh. Lay flat to air dry, reshaping the garment while damp to maintain its form. Avoid hanging as it may stretch the fibers. Store folded rather than hung to prevent stretching. Use cedar blocks or lavender sachets to deter moths
Cashmere
Cashmere is a soft, luxurious fabric that requires gentle care to maintain its delicate fibers
Hand wash in cold water using a mild detergent made for cashmere or wool. Gently press out water without wringing or twisting. Lay flat to air dry on a towel, reshaping the garment while damp. Store cashmere items folded in a breathable cotton bag. Avoid hanging, and use moth repellents like cedar for added protection
Viscose
Viscose is a breathable, lightweight fabric, but it can shrink if not handled with care
Hand wash in cold water or use a delicate machine cycle. Avoid hot water, which can cause the fabric to shrink. Lay flat to dry to help the fabric keep its shape. Tumble drying is not recommended. Iron inside out on low heat, or use steam to remove wrinkles gently.
Cotton
Cotton is a durable, natural fiber, but it requires proper care to avoid shrinkage and maintain its softness. Machine wash in cold or lukewarm water with like colors. Use a gentle detergent to help preserve the quality of the fabric. Air-dry whenever possible or tumble dry on a low heat setting. High heat can cause shrinkage. Iron on medium heat while the fabric is still slightly damp, or use a steamer for the best results
Alpaca
Alpaca is a luxurious and warm fabric, softer and more durable than wool
Hand wash in cool water using a gentle detergent or a wool-friendly machine cycle. Avoid excessive agitation to prevent felting. Lay flat to air dry, reshaping the garment while it is damp. Avoid drying in direct sunlight or near heat sources. Store folded in a cool, dry place. Use moth repellents to keep your alpaca garments in top condition
